Japanese Children's Day

Durham University Oriental Museum, Elvet Hill, Durham, DH1 3TH

Celebrate Japanese Children's Day, make a cool carp banner, dress up in our fantastic array of kimonos and take some selfies.

Children can make a traditional koinobori, or carp banner and visitors will have the opportunity to try on some beautiful kimonos and take selfies. At 2pm there will be a samurai sword demonstration by Shodai Ryu, Durham’s own dojo.

Traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month, tango no sekku, or Boys’ Day originally celebrated the health and happiness of boys. In recent years, girls and boys are celebrated on Children’s Day.

  • drop in (any time between 1 and 3 pm).
  • this activity is included in the Museum admission price and is generally suitable for children aged 5 to 11.
