Friday, 24 November 2017 , 13:30 to 14:30

Enjoy a tour of Durham’s history in the magnificent setting of Durham’s World Heritage Site and hear local tales and stories from the last 1000 years. Discover why Durham was such an important city in the medieval period, why the Normans had a difficult time and how St Cuthbert helped the city grow.

The tour will take you through the history of Durham over the last 1000 years using the beautiful buildings around Palace Green. Historic Durham tours unfold the architecture, the history and the stories of the people of Durham to introduce the history of the World Heritage Site. You will be amazed at what you learn from the enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides, who will tell some of the tales, from Bishop Flambard one of the powerful 'Prince-Bishops' who was the first person to be imprisoned in the Tower of London to St Cuthbert and how in the Second World War he helped protect Durham.

This is an outdoors tour which takes place on Palace Green, the open area between Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral, which together make up the World Heritage Site. Other interesting and important buildings which reflect the history of Durham over the years also surround it and will be brought to life in this tour. The tour will take place in all weather conditions. Visitors wishing to take part in a Historic Durham guided tour need to purchase tickets from Palace Green Library and then meet your tour guide just outside.

Please contact the Palace Green Library on 0191 334 2932 to check information on the current times, dates of tours and to book advance tickets.
