Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough: Beyond the Northlands

Palace Green Library

Saturday 14 October, 11.30am–12.30pm

From the dying days of the eighth century, the Vikings voyaged to all corners of the medieval world and beyond. Their stories are preserved in the Old Norse sagas, which mix realism and fantasy to become exotic, quasi-historical adventures. In Beyond the Northlands, Eleanor Barraclough takes her own trip through the dramatic landscapes that inspired these sagas – enabling us to understand the Norsemen like never before.

Eleanor Barraclough is a Lecturer in Medieval History and Literature at Durham University. She was one of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Thinkers 2013.

Introduced by Dr Alex Barber, Durham University
