Celebrating Norman Cornish

Durham Town Hall (Burlison Gallery)

14.10.17

11am–12pm

Norman Cornish was born in 1919 in Spennymoor, County Durham and went on to become one of the most celebrated British artists of the 20th Century. Norman became a miner at the age of 14 and at 15 he was accepted as a member of the sketching club at the Spennymoor Settlement. Although Norman remained working in the pits until 1966, his career as an artist grew and he exhibited his work both regionally and nationally.

Cornish’s work focuses on the everyday life of the people of Spennymoor. To mark the publication of Behind the Scenes: The Norman Cornish Sketchbooks, Cornish experts Harriet Hunter-Smart, the curator at The Garden Rooms at Tennant’s, and academic Keith Wilson will discuss the work of Norman Cornish and his legacy.
