Storybook characters brought to life in icy form as Fire&Ice InDurham returns to the City this Half Term

Drum roll please… after much speculation (and a few little leaks online – some people were just too excited!), we’re super pleased to tell you that Fire&Ice InDurham will once again be a headline feature of the February Half Term Break across the City, with the event taking place across Durham on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th February 2018.

Fire&Ice InDurham is a must-do for many families across Durham and we’re delighted to confirm that this much-loved event will be making a return to the City during the final weekend of the February Half Term break.

Building on the popularity of the event, now in its third iteration, this year’s theme of Fire&Ice InDurham will follow the concept of ‘Literary Characters’.  With 10 ice sculptures carefully carved by the team at Glacial Arts and placed around the City seeing the trail lit by flaming beacons, the installations will bring to life some of the region’s most-loved storybook characters.

We’re so excited we can barely wait… there’s such a broad scope to capture people’s imaginations and push the realms of possibility in using the ice to bring these characters to life and we’re really looking forward to sharing the experience with you!

While the final artwork concepts for each of the different sculptures are being drawn up by the team at Glacial Arts, we can tell you that the installations this year will feature some classics from tales of old, more contemporary characters from some of Britain’s best loved authors, and icy interpretations of well-known characters who’ve made the transition from the pages of books to being blockbusters on the big screen.

Throughout the course of the two days, you’ll be able to explore the City by following the ice trail, witness the professionals in action at live demonstrations while giving ice carving a go yourself at stations set up in the Market Place.  Then, each evening of the event will culminate in a spectacular grand finale, seeing shooting water jets and fiery flames dancing in time to a rousing soundtrack that is fitting for the literary theme.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be revealing the full line up, but for now we want you to put the date in your diary and schedule some time to come and see the ice sculptures in the City before it’s too late and they melt away for another year.

And if Fire&Ice InDurham wasn’t enough to keep you entertained, the icy cool yet fiery festival takes place over the course of the InDurham Weekend - a series of events coming together, including Dine InDurham, Fashion InDurham and Live InDurham - giving you even more reason to come into the City on the third weekend of every month.

This year, Fire&Ice InDurham also coincides with Chinese New Year across the City. If you’re planning on coming to the event on Saturday afternoon, you’ll witness the traditional lion dance while it wows the crowds in the Market Place on Saturday 17th February, set against the backdrop of Fire&Ice InDurham’s water jets and fiery flames, used in the grand finale shows.

Last year we people travelling from all across the North – even as far as Leeds – to come to the event during that weekend in 2017.  This year’s line-up is more exciting and ambitious than ever before.  It’s such a great day out in Durham for all the family to enjoy, especially if you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained this Half Term.  We’re confident Fire&Ice InDurham will be bigger and better than ever before.

We’re really looking forward to seeing you there! Don’t forget… stay tuned to our blog and social media channels for more news about Fire&Ice InDurham coming your way very, very soon!
