An augmented reality digital trail is set to bring festive cheer to Durham City from Saturday 17th December!
The first of its kind outside of London, the digital trail encourages lets you hunt for posters to find festive 3D characters. Using an augmented reality app and guided by a map, you can discover the Christmas characters by finding seven posters with hidden codes placed around the City.
Augmented reality apps and games have swept the nation (and the world) this year and so we're keen for Durham as a vibrant and exciting City to have something fun and digital that lets people explore Durham and all it has to offer, whilst getting into the festive spirit.
Durham is especially magical at this time of the year and the digital trail will help visitors to discover new areas of the City – it’s great to see our historical city embracing exciting, new technology. The digital trail is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy in the run up to Christmas and the New Year, especially when the kids are on holiday and are looking for something fun to do.
In order to take part in the trail, visitors need to download Zappar – an augmented reality app which is free and available on both tablets and smartphones.
It’s so simple to use - once you’ve downloaded the app, you just need to find the posters and scan them using the app whilst standing on the footplate stickers. There’s even a footplate next to each poster so you know exactly where to stand to have your photo taken with each of the fun characters you’ll discover as you explore.
The app then allows you to share the photos you've taken with friends and family on social media so you can let everyone know when you've discovered each one!
The trail will be live until 7th January 2017.
As a taster of what it's all about - scan the code here using the Zappar app to get a taste of Durham’s Christmas digital trail!
